Barnwell History

Robert W. Barnwell Junior High School opened in the fall of 1980. The school was named in honor of a former Superintendent of the Francis Howell School District who served from 1955 until 1965.

When Barnwell opened, the population was made up of seventh, eighth and ninth grade students. The school mascot was the Buccaneer and the school colors were blue and white. There were school athletic teams, cheerleaders and a marching band.

In 1993, the school district made the change to a middle school organization, so the school name was changed to Barnwell Middle School. As part of its new identity, the students voted to change the mascot to a bulldog, and the school colors became red and black.
